Ties are an integral part of a businessperson’s dress. It is also worn as a part of semi formal attire. These accessories help men express their style and individuality. Imagine, if all men dressed in black suits worn the same tie for an event. Won’t that be boring! Ties are what make men stand out in the crowd. As suits do not really change in style or and formal color options for them are limited, ties help to express uniqueness. They are available in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and designs. You can get a skinny tie or a wide one to go with your formal dress. Ties can also be matched with other accessories like hankies and the collar shirt. In fact, it would not be wrong to call them the most flexible part of a man’s attire. You can experiment with it o your heart’s content!

When did the necktie originate? This is a debatable question. Most believe that neckties came into being when they were first worn by Croatian soldiers during the Thirty Years’ War. This is as far back as the 17th century. After that, they began to get regularly worn in Paris, the fashion capital of the world. In some more time, they started to get used in England and the American colonies. Today, everyone wear neckties. They are an essential part of men’s clothing. In fact, even women are seen flaunting colour and sober ties on different occasions.

Ties are of many types. Over the years, different forms like cravats, ascots, bandannas and scarves have evolved. Even a bola is called a tie, but as it is not made of fabric, many do not consider it as a type of necktie.

Today, primarily two types of ties are worn: the bow tie and the long tie. Bow ties are usually limited to official events though some men are known to wear them on a regular basis. The long tie is the regular tie around the world. Some of them have a clip-on for ease of wearing. Mostly young boys wear clip on ties. Such ties fall off if they are pulled while if a standard tie is pulled, it could even strangle the wearer.

Long ties differ in length to accommodate tall men. They even have different width and can range from 1-inch wide to up to 5-inches wide. Their knots can also differ. The Windsor knot is one of the largest knots. It requires the tie to have considerable length and involves many intricate steps. Half Windsor knot, the Pratt knot and the four-in-hand knot are smaller and simpler knots.

The use of ties has been ever-changing. Today, they are common part of uniform and business suits.

Ties stand for status. If someone is found wearing an expensive silk tie, he will be considered loaded with mega bucks. Often, clubs want their members to wear ties for social events. Ties can be showy or conventional. One needs to make the right choice.
