There are plenty of new styles and trends being followed by today’s youth and also being used in making motorcycle jackets. But most of these can be summarized into two basic styles, and what you happen to choose when buying yourself a leather jacket will fall under these two categories.

As with most things, there are some very slight but nevertheless important variations among these very styles and they can be called substyles. Therefore, the two fundamental styles are:

o The tight, but colorful motorcycle racing leather protective variant

o The comparatively loose fitting trousers and jackets

It is important to note here that these styles extend to trousers to, as well as jackets.

Also, there are several one piece clothing variants available, which are basically trousers and jackets rolled into one. They resemble overalls and are protective and bulky in nature but are definitely not suitable for everyday usage.

A leather jacket is a coat like dress made of animal hides. It’s almost always, lengthwise, upto the waist and thigh, and come in several colors ranging from black and brown to dark grey. These three are the most commonly seen leather jacket colors.

Leather jackets are of two types: they can be either protective or fashionable in nature. That’s not to say that the protective sort can’t be protective. Those that are made just for appeasing the fashionable at heart, aren’t of much use apart from providing warmth. They are not protective in nature at all. Therefore they may not help in case of a serious injury or accident. On the other hand, protective leather jackets can go a long way in ensuring you stay unharmed, for the most part, in case of a serious injury.

It is a myth that jackets like lambskin leather blazers are only meant to be worn to parties, gatherings or special dates and occasions. They are equally suitable for day to day usage. In the 20th century, the leather jacket has seen an upsurge in popularity, owing to Hollywood and its many movies. Police officers, pilots, and biker gang members and punks generally come to mind when thinking about leather jackets.

Best of all, leather jackets particularly lambskin leather blazers will never go out of style, and never have, and are evergreen in their timeless appeal. They come in all shapes and sizes, and colors, for both men and women, and children too. They offer a near-perfect combination of fashion, comfort and style, and can be worn throughout the year.

Leather jackets are hardy, and do not need to be regularly cleaned and taken care of. This is an added bonus to wearing and owning one. However, if you do clean a leather jacket, it should be done by professionals, as if the leather has lost a bit of its dye, it needs to be reworked and re-dyed to get back its sheen and original hue.

The tight fitting and colorful leather jackets you see are generally worn by racers and riders and are mainly for protective purposes. Furthermore, since they are mainly worn to provide amour like protection, they are made of high quality material and never come cheap. So, if you find leather jackets resembling them being sold cheaply, do not buy them, as they are merely low-quality copies.

Resizing a leather biker jacket for a more snug fit?

I bought a leather biker jacket recently(ramones-esque) and the back tends to hang or poof out. Is there any way of pinning or having it sewn so it’s more form fitting? It’s a large, and I did try on a medium but the arms didn’t fit right…

A shoe repair shop may be able to help you. They have the equipment for working with heavier leather. You may be able to find a tailor or seamstress willing to take on the challenge. Check your local yellow pages to see if there is someone in your area who makes custom leather clothing or purses. Sometimes at motorcycle shows, or art fairs there are people who do custom leather work and repairs.

Keep in mind that riding gear fits differently than regular wearing apparel. Biker jackets are designed to fit best when in a riding position. Even the more form fitting leathers are made this way. They will blouse out in the back, as you described, when you are just standing around.
