what kind of sewing machine should I buy?

I’m looking into buying a sewing machine. Not sure if I should get a combo… sewing & embroidery or just get a good sewing machine now & later a good embroidery machine. I’m looking to spend around $500… one that allows me to be creative & be able to sew through denim or thick fabrics. I’ll be using it to make curtains, handbags, clothes, beddings… etc. I’ve looked at the Brother PC 420 & Brother SE 400

You can get a very good sewing machine for $500. And you can get the SE400 for about the same price.

Look a little further than Walmart for your first sewing machine.

A sewing machine dealer will have many models you can try out and they will be able to assist you should you have a question later on. In addition, the dealer will service the machine when needed.

I would start by visiting as many dealers as possible. Tell them what you want to be able to sew and that you have a budget.

Ask them to demonstrate the button hole and blind hem features of the machine. You want to be able to easily make a button hole and you want and an adjustable blind hem feature as well. The rest of the sewing will be very much like any other sewing machine.

Buy the machine you like best from the dealer you like best.

You may decide you do not need an embroidery feature, but if you do, check out the many models of Bother and Babylock. USB connectivity (for downloading designs from your PC) and a hoop area larger than the standard 4 x 4 are important features.
