Eagle Mountain Lake is an 8,738 acre reservoir located north of Fort Worth Texas in Tarrant County on the West Fork of the Trinity River. Eagle Mountain Lake is bordered by several north Texas cities including Fort Worth, Azle, Newark and Boyd.

The lake was impounded in 1932 and is controlled by the Tarrant Regional Water District as the lake serves as the water supply for the city of Fort Worth as well as the other cities in Tarrant County. Several other lakes are controlled and managed by the Tarrant Regional Water District including Lake Worth, Benbrook, Cedar Creek Lake and Richland Chambers Reservoir.

The lake has a maximum depth of 47 feet and water levels can fluctuate as much as 10 feet during times of limited rainfall and high water usage by Tarrant county residents. Water released flows down the Trinity River into Lake Worth, just a few miles south.

The proximity of the lake to the city of Fort Worth makes it a popular destination for recreation, boating and fishing for residents and visitors to the Fort Worth area. Popular species include blue, channel and flathead catfish, white bass, bass and crappie. Here are some basic tips and tricks for fishing on Eagle Mountain Lake.

Catfishing – Catfishing is considered to be good to excellent and the lake has strong populations of blue, channel and flathead catfish. Channel Catfish are often caught using prepared catfish baits like catfish punch bait or catfish dip bait fished in areas baited with catfish chum like soured wheat, milo or range cubes. Blue catfish are caught using fresh caught shad or cut bait fished anchored or through the catfishing technique commonly referred to as “drift fishing”

White Bass (Sand Bass, Sandies) – White bass also commonly referred to as sandbass or sandies can be caught during most of the year but are much more productive during warmer months (March through October). White bass fishing is considered to be good to excellent by most anglers and these fish are commonly caught using slabs fished on or near the bottom and on lures and top water lures as well.

Crappie – Good to excellent numbers of crappie exist and they are a sought after species. There is an absence of standing timber so crappie anglers rely on cover and structure created by the lakes many privately owned boat docks and marinas. Fishing with jigs and live minnows for Eagle Mountain Lake crappie is a very common fishing technique.

Bass – Largemouth bass are commonly caught around boat docks, marinas and reed beds that are located throughout the lake using techniques and lures popular for bass fishing. Many tournaments are held on the lake at regular intervals as well.

There is very little standing timber in the lake but it does exist in certain areas, primarily in the backs of coves and creeks. The only major hazards that exist in the main lake areas are very shallow water, especially in low water periods created by the expansive shallow flats, points and humps in the main lake. When water levels are low there are areas in the main lake that can have less than two feet of water at times (surrounded by very deep water).
